 4 Our Kids - Safety

Children everywhere are drawn to the internet for games, fun and interaction with their peers, but it isn't always a safe place ot be. With sexual predators, hate sites and other nastiness hidden away on the net, you want to make sure that your kids can browse freely and without worry.

Nine Tips for Safety

Here are nine tips for using the Internet safely.
Post them on or near your computer.

1. Never give out personal information online without your parents’ permission. This includes your name, home address, school address, e-mail address, and phone number.

2. When using chat-rooms, use only your first name or a nickname that doesn’t tell anything about who you are. Stay in the public areas of chat-rooms and avoid private, one-on-one conversations.

3. Never send photos of yourself to people you meet on the Internet.

4. Use good manners when you talk with others.

5. Do not respond to anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable or is unkind. Tell your Mom, Dad or      another grown-up so they can contact the online service provider or the police.

6. Let your parents “visit online” along with you to meet your friends and know a little about what you chat about.

7. Never arrange to meet someone in person you have met online unless your parents know. Meet in a safe public place and bring a parent or another grown-up with you.

8. Do not believe everything you read on the Internet.

9. Tell your parents about everything you do online.
Talk to them about the kinds of things they do not like you to do or look at on the computer.
